dc.description.abstractotrodiomaWereviewtheevidenceofexocytosisfromextrasynapticsitesinthesoma,dendrites,andaxonalvaricositiesofcentralandperipheralneuronsofvertebratesandinvertebrates,withemphasisonsomaticexocytosis,andhowitcontributestosignalinginthenervoussystem.Thefindingofsecretoryvesiclesinextrasynapticsitesofneurons,thepresenceofsignalingmolecules(namelytransmittersorpeptides)intheextracellularspaceoutsidesynapticclefts,andthemismatchbetweenexocytosissitesandthelocationofreceptorsforthesemoleculesinneuronsandglialcells,havelongsuggestedthatinadditiontosynapticcommunication,transmittersarereleased,andactextrasynaptically.Thecatalogofthesemoleculesincludeslowmolecularweighttransmitterssuchasmonoamines,acetylcholine,glutamate,gama-aminobutiricacid(GABA),adenosine-5-triphosphate(ATP),andalistofpeptidesincludingsubstanceP,brain-derivedneurotrophicfactor(BDNF),andoxytocin.Bycomparingthemechanismsofextrasynapticexocytosisofdifferentsignalingmoleculesbyvariousneurontypesweshowthatitisawidespreadmechanismforcommunicationinthenervoussystemthatusescertaincommonmechanisms,whicharedifferentfromthoseofsynapticexocytosisbutsimilartothoseofexocytosisfromexcitableendocrinecells.Somaticexocytosishasbeenmeasureddirectlyindifferentneurontypes.Itstartsafterhigh-frequencyelectricalactivityorlongexperimentaldepolarizationsandmaycontinueforseveralminutesaftertheendofstimulation.ActivationofL-typecalciumchannels,calciumreleasefromintracellularstoresandvesicletransporttowardstheplasmamembranecoupleexcitationandexocytosisfromsmallclearorlargedensecorevesiclesinreleasesiteslackingpostsynapticcounterparts.Thepresenceofsynapticandextrasynapticexocytosisendowsindividualneuronswithawidevarietyoftime-andspace-dependentcommunicationpossibilities.Extrasynapticexocytosismaybethemajorsourceofsignalingmoleculesproducingvolumetransmissionandbydoingsomaybepartofalongdurationsignalingmodeinthenervoussystem.es_ES
