Abstract
Description
Medicinal plants with central nervous system (CNS) activity have a long history in Mexico. This review summarizes pharmacological studies about three Mexican species traditionally used in the treatment of epilepsy: Annona diversifolia Saff., Magnolia dealbata Zucc., and Ruta chalepensis L. We highlight the use of experimental models to support the traditional use of these species as well as the identification and evaluation of their bioactive compounds, such as palmitone from Annona diversifolia Saff., honokiol and magnolol from Magnolia dealbata Zucc. In our knowledge, metabolites of Ruta chalepensis with antiepileptic activity have not been reported yet. Other CNS applications of these species include their use as sedative and anxiety therapy, supporting the need for continued preclinical studies using the active compounds found in these plants with therapeutic potential.
